1975 Norton Commando 850 Roadster. Full restoration completed March 2018.
This bike was brought to the shop as a tired, worn out Commando that had not run in years. Our client wanted a complete restoration, so we got to work. After disassembling everything, we found the frame and pertinent parts to be good candidates for restoration.
The frame was first checked for straightness then reconditioned and powder coated to a durable, smooth as glass, rich black. New isolastics, and chassis bearings and bushing were installed. All original hardware in good condition was cleaned and re cadmium plated to a factory finish. All aluminium parts were reconditioned and meticulously polished to a mirror like burnish.
The engine was completely rebuilt. All new modern bearings and bushings were installed to provide years of smooth trouble free miles. The original connecting rods were used with new Hepolite pistons (+.40). The cylinder head was rebuilt with all new guides, valves, and springs. The damaged exhaust port threads were re-sleeved to ensure proper head pipe connection.
A pair of new Amal concentric carburetors meter the air and fuel.
The gearbox was rebuilt, using all new OEM Norton parts, where needed. A few case modifications were made allowing modern seals to be installed, preventing oil leaks.
The electrical system was upgraded with electronic ignition and new OEM Norton wire harness. A high torque starter was installed making a quick button push all thats need to bring the engine to life.
The front brake system uses a rebuilt stock master, caliper, new lines, and the factory rotor was Blanchard ground to ensure flatness and cross drilled for cooling. The rear has a refurbished stock disc setup.
This Commando was meticulously restored over the course of six months. The bike looks and runs beautifully, and will provide many years, and miles, of reliable enjoyment.
